Website and App Security in Ireland: The 2026 Checklist
On this page

Irish website security has one pattern, and we see it weekly: a small business runs a site for years, patches nothing, and one morning finds it defaced, spamming, or holding customer data to ransom. The October 2026 discovery of critical PHP flaws, uncovered with AI assistance and reported to threaten a large share of the internet, was a reminder that the threat surface is shared: your site is only as safe as the software it runs. This checklist is the fix.

The 2026 security checklist

  1. HTTPS everywhere, correctly configured. Free certificates via Let’s Encrypt, HSTS enabled, and no mixed content. Non-negotiable.
  2. Patch automatically, daily. Critical vulnerabilities are exploited within hours of disclosure. If your platform cannot patch itself automatically, that is a reason to migrate, covered in our WordPress migration guide.
  3. MFA on every admin and hosting account. Multi-factor authentication stops credential reuse attacks, which are still the most common entry point.
  4. Least-privilege access. Nobody holds admin access they do not need, and access is revoked when people leave. Our cloud IAM guide covers the same discipline for infrastructure.
  5. Backups with tested restores. Daily backups, stored separately from the site, restored in a drill at least quarterly. See our backup and disaster recovery guide.
  6. A web application firewall or equivalent. Rate limiting and request filtering catch automated attacks before they reach your application.
  7. Monitoring and alerts. Know within minutes when files change, logins happen from new locations, or uptime drops.
  8. Regular testing. An annual penetration test, plus vulnerability scanning after every major change.

The OWASP lens

The OWASP Top 10 is the industry’s list of the most critical web application risks: broken access control, injection, insecure design, and misconfiguration among them. A good way to pressure-test any supplier is to ask how their builds address the current OWASP list. If the answer is vague, so is their security.

When something goes wrong

Isolate first, investigate second. Take the site offline, change every credential, restore from a clean backup, patch the entry point, then assess whether personal data was involved: under GDPR, breaches that risk people’s rights must be reported to the DPC within 72 hours. Our GDPR guide covers the duty in detail.

How we build secure sites

Security is designed in, not bolted on: static sites with almost no attack surface, managed hosting with automatic patching, IAM from day one, and monitoring. Our data plane hardening case study and IAM and SOC 2 hardening case study show the standard. If you want a security review of what you run today, book a call.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common ways Irish websites get hacked?

Outdated plugins and software, weak or reused passwords, missing multi-factor authentication, unpatched servers, and third-party scripts. Most breaches are boring, preventable, and automated.

What was the PHP flaw that made news in October 2026?

Security researchers using AI uncovered critical PHP flaws that threatened a large share of the internet, and Irish companies and government bodies stepped up cyber defences in response, as reported by Irish tech media in October 2026.

What are the minimum security controls for an SME website?

HTTPS everywhere, automatic patching, MFA on every admin account, daily backups with tested restores, a web application firewall or equivalent, and monitoring that alerts you when something changes.

How often should I patch?

Automatically, daily. Critical vulnerabilities are exploited within hours of disclosure. Manual monthly patching is the number one avoidable cause of breaches we see.

Do I need a penetration test?

Annually at minimum, and after any major build. For regulated or high-risk businesses, more often. A pen test finds what automated scanners miss.

What should I do if my site is compromised?

Isolate it, change all credentials, restore from a clean backup, patch the entry point, then report if personal data was involved, GDPR breach duties apply within 72 hours.
