Website Accessibility and the EU Accessibility Act in Ireland
On this page

Accessibility used to be a nice-to-have conversation on Irish web projects. The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) changed that: its obligations apply from 28 June 2025, and they cover the e-commerce websites through which Irish businesses sell to consumers. Beyond the legal side, an accessible website is a better website for everyone: clearer, faster, more usable, and more visible to search engines and AI crawlers.

The standard: WCAG 2.1 AA

Across the EU, the benchmark is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. Four principles sit underneath it:

  • Perceivable: content must be presentable in ways all users can perceive, including alt text for images and captions for video.
  • Operable: everything must work with a keyboard, not just a mouse, with visible focus states and no traps.
  • Understandable: predictable navigation, clear labels, and helpful error messages on forms.
  • Robust: semantic HTML that works with assistive technologies like screen readers.

The checks that catch most failures

  1. Alt text. Every meaningful image has a text alternative; decorative images are marked as such.
  2. Colour contrast. Text meets AA contrast ratios against its background, including buttons and form labels.
  3. Keyboard access. Tab through your site and complete a booking or purchase without touching a mouse.
  4. Focus states. The element in focus is visibly highlighted everywhere.
  5. Form labels. Every field is labelled and errors explain how to fix the problem.
  6. Headings. One H1, then a logical H2/H3 order, which also helps search engines and AI crawlers understand the page.
  7. Zoom. The page works at 200% zoom without content breaking.

The business case

  • Law. The EAA’s obligations have applied since 28 June 2025, and Irish regulators and advocacy groups are active.
  • Market. Roughly one in six people experiences disability; an inaccessible site closes the door on them and their families.
  • SEO and AI. Semantic HTML, alt text, and clean structure are exactly what search engines and AI crawlers read. Accessibility is a silent ranking and citation advantage, which feeds directly into getting cited by AI.

How we build

Accessibility is a default in our builds, not a bolt-on: semantic markup, keyboard navigation, focus management, and contrast are part of the web design service, and we verify with automated audits plus manual keyboard testing. Book a call if you want to know where your site stands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the European Accessibility Act?

Directive (EU) 2019/882, which sets accessibility requirements for products and services sold in the EU, including e-commerce websites. Its obligations apply from 28 June 2025.

Does the Accessibility Act apply to my small Irish business?

If you sell products or services to consumers through a website, the e-commerce requirements likely apply to you. Microenterprises have some exemptions, but the safer and better business decision is to build accessibly regardless.

What standard should my website meet?

WCAG 2.1 level AA is the de facto benchmark used across the EU, including by the European Accessibility Act. That covers contrast, keyboard access, alt text, and more.

What is the fastest accessibility win for my website?

Proper alternative text on images, sufficient colour contrast, keyboard-navigable menus, and labelled form fields. These four fix the majority of common failures.

Does accessibility help my SEO?

Yes. Accessible sites are more crawlable and readable by both search engines and AI crawlers: clean headings, alt text, and semantic HTML all feed visibility.

How do I check my website's accessibility?

Run Lighthouse's accessibility audit, test your main journey with a keyboard only, and consider a professional audit against WCAG 2.1 AA for a full picture.
