Google Search Console for Irish SMEs
On this page

Google Search Console (GSC) is the most underused free tool in Irish marketing. It tells you exactly what Google thinks of your website: which queries you appear for, which pages are indexed, and what is broken. Every Irish SME should have it installed, and this guide covers the parts that matter.

Setup in ten minutes

  1. Go to search.google.com/search-console.
  2. Add your domain (the domain property, not the URL prefix, covers everything).
  3. Verify ownership with a DNS TXT record or an HTML tag.
  4. Submit your sitemap under Sitemaps.

Data starts appearing within days, and within a few weeks you have a real picture.

The Performance report: your best keyword data

Performance shows the real queries Irish users typed to find you, with impressions, clicks, and average position across 16 months. Two habits make it pay:

  • Sort by impressions and filter to positions 4 to 20. These are queries where Google already trusts you but your page is not specific enough. Each one is a page to write or improve, which is the core of our keyword research method.
  • Watch the trend monthly. Queries climbing or falling tell you what to feed and what to fix before traffic moves.

The Pages report: fix your indexation

Pages shows what is indexed and why the rest is excluded. The common Irish SME causes: blocked by robots.txt, noindex tags left on by a template, or thin duplicate pages competing with each other. Fix the cause, click request indexing, and watch coverage recover.

URL inspection: the page-level doctor

Paste any URL to see whether it is indexed, how Google last rendered it, and whether it passed Core Web Vitals. Use it after every launch and redesign, which is why our redesign guide makes it a launch step.

Core Web Vitals report

Search Console reports your real-user speed metrics per page group. Slow groups show up here, and the fixes are in our speed guide.

Search Console in an AI world

Indexation and crawl health are the foundation everything else stands on. If Google struggles to crawl you, AI crawlers struggle too, and you will never be cited. GSC is therefore step one of our AI search visibility service: we connect it, read the data, and turn it into a work list.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google Search Console?

Google's free tool that shows how your site performs in Google Search: which queries you appear for, which pages are indexed, and what problems Google found crawling your site.

How do I set up Google Search Console?

Sign in, add your domain, verify ownership with a DNS record or HTML tag, and submit your sitemap. Verification takes minutes; data starts flowing immediately.

What is the most useful report for an Irish SME?

The Performance report: real queries, clicks, impressions, and average position over 16 months. It is the single best source of keyword ideas and quick wins you own.

How do I fix pages that are not indexed?

The Pages report lists why pages are excluded. Common Irish SME causes: blocked by robots.txt, noindex tags, or thin duplicate pages. Fix the reason, then request indexing.

Do I need to submit a sitemap?

Yes. A sitemap tells Google about every important URL. Submit it once, and Search Console tracks coverage and errors for it permanently.

Can Search Console help with AI search?

Indirectly but importantly: indexation and crawl health are prerequisites for AI citations. If Google cannot crawl you cleanly, AI crawlers will struggle too.
