How to measure AI share of voice (GEO's missing KPI)

SEO had rankings. GEO needs a new scoreboard. The metric that matters now is AI share of voice: how often your brand shows up in AI answers relative to your competitors.

What to measure

  • Citation share: across your target queries, what percentage of answers cite you vs. a competitor?
  • Answer presence: does the model name you, recommend your category, or link to you?
  • Sentiment: when it does mention you, does it describe you correctly?
  • Referral traffic: are cited answers actually sending you visitors?

How to measure it (practically)

  1. Pick 20–40 target queries: the questions your buyers actually ask (“best analytics tools for startups”).
  2. Query the engines weekly: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews.
  3. Record: cited or not, named or not, linked or not, and whether the answer is accurate.
  4. Score and trend: track your citation share over time, query by query.

Automate it

Doing this by hand is slow and inconsistent. The better way is an agent that runs the queries on a schedule, parses the answers, and posts a weekly report, with an alert the moment a competitor displaces you on a high-value query.

That’s the real unlock: GEO stops being a quarterly project and becomes a continuously monitored channel, like paid search or email.

The benchmark that matters

You’re not chasing a single number. You’re chasing direction: is your share of the AI conversation going up or down, and on which queries? That trend, and the alerts, is what lets you respond in days, not quarters.

Next: Google Ads on autopilot.
