Conversion rate optimization for engineers

Most “conversion optimization” is a rebrand of “we moved the button and hoped.” Real CRO is an engineering discipline: measure, find the leak, fix it, and prove the fix worked.

Step 1: Instrument the funnel

You can’t optimize what you can’t see. Wire GA4 (or your analytics) to every step, landing page, form, checkout, confirmation. The drop-off points are your roadmap.

Step 2: Find the real leak

The biggest leak is rarely the hero image. It’s usually friction: a five-step checkout, a forced account, a shipping cost revealed at the last second, a form asking for a phone number it doesn’t need. Find where buyers actually bail, not where you think they bail.

Step 3: Remove friction

  • Collapse steps, add guest checkout, autocomplete addresses.
  • Show shipping and total up front.
  • Add trust signals, payment badges, guarantees, live stock.

Step 4: Test, don’t guess

Ship one change at a time, A/B it, and let the data decide. A structured experiment program beats a year of opinion-driven redesigns, and it compounds.

The result

Removing friction at the point of highest drop-off routinely lifts conversion 20–30% on the same traffic. That’s not more ad spend, it’s more revenue from visitors you already paid for.
